What is a gully?
Gully’s are ground level drains which are designed to channel water. They provide a drain away system for rain water to prevent surface water build up on the road.
They generally consist of a concrete pot positioned under the road surface with an iron gate visible from the road.
The idea of a gully is that only water can pass through, however debris such as soil, leaves and rubbish can also get caught in these gullies. This causes blockages, preventing the free flow of water to the main sewer.
It’s important that gullies are cleared and emptied regularly to prevent such debris from building up within the pipe of the drain and obstructing the water capacity within the drain.
