What’s the difference between a Septic Tank, a Cesspit and a Cesspool?

Septic tanks are part of a sewage treatment system and have an outlet that runs to a soakaway.

A cesspit or cesspool is a holding tank without an outlet. It is not part of a sewage treatment system, it is just used for the storage of waste.

How do you empty a septic tank?

We send out one of our vacuum tankers for all septic tank pumping.

We have equipped these specialist trucks with a long flexible hose. The tanker operator will insert this hose into your septic tank and a powerful suction force is then used to empty all the waste out. We then take it away and dispose of it properly for you.

How often should I empty my septic tank?

We recommend that you arrange to empty your septic tank once a year to ensure it works well.

It’s also important to note that the tank emptying schedule varies from tank to tank – it’s dependent on the type of tank, the size of the tank and how many people are in your home or workplace.

Warning signs that you need to empty your septic tank

Indications of a full septic tank include:

  • Slow-flushing toilets

  • Slow drainage or water backing up into sinks, showers or baths

  • Gurgling drainpipes

  • Sewage backing up in toilets and sinks

  • Visible signs of the tank itself overflowing
